Does DC Fast Charging Degrade an EV Battery?
TL;DR: The dealers moving used EVs fastest are not the ones with the best script. They are the ones who can answer a battery question with a document. In Voltest data across 10,994 VINs, vehicles below 70% state of health are 0.4% of the population but 21% of all observed failures, at a 31.71% prevalence rate inside that band. Screening removes those cars from your pool. Publishing the result removes the buyer's doubt about the ones that remain.
A dealer in Florida who started working with us a few weeks ago sent me a text at 1:34 in the morning. It said: "Voltest done this morning, and we sold it tonight. Transparency selling EVs is key."
Those are his words, not mine. I have now spoken with hundreds of dealers across the US and abroad in a couple of years, and the same sentence keeps coming back in different accents. The most successful ones build their marketing on absolute transparency. It is the thing that separates them from the crowd, and it is not a personality trait. It is a process.
Why used EVs punish vagueness specifically
Selling a used petrol car with a vague answer is survivable. The buyer has thirty years of cultural knowledge about engines and a mechanic they trust. Selling a used EV with a vague answer is not survivable, for three reasons.
The buyer is learning the technology in real time. They are asking questions they have never asked about a car before, which means they have no baseline for what a normal answer sounds like. A confident non-answer reads as evasion.
The unknown is expensive. A buyer worried about a transmission is worried about a repair. A buyer worried about a battery is worried about a number in the thousands. The stakes make them cautious in a way they are not on an ICE car.
They can leave silently. A buyer with an unanswered question does not argue. They thank you, walk out, and buy from someone who answered it. You never learn why.
That last one is the expensive part, because it never shows up in your CRM as a lost deal for a reason you can fix.
The two jobs a battery test does
Most people frame testing as a risk-avoidance tool. It is, but that is only half of it.
Job one: keep bad inventory out. Voltest's diagnostic dataset covers 10,994 unique VINs. [1] The state-of-health breakdown makes the case:
Vehicles below 70% SoH are 0.4% of the population and run 31.71% failure prevalence. The 70% to 75% band runs 2.70%, and 75% to 80% runs 1.20%. Everything at 80% and above, which is 91.1% of the population, runs 0.35%.
Vehicles below 70% SoH are four-tenths of one percent of the population and 21% of every observed failure, running a 31.71% prevalence rate. Vehicles under 80% overall run 2.76% against 0.35% for everything at 80% and above, an eight-fold difference.
A single screening rule at 80% removes the great majority of concentrated risk while retaining 91% of available inventory. That is not a restrictive filter. It is a cheap one.
Job two: make the good inventory sellable. This is the part dealers underuse. Once the car is screened, the report stops being a defensive document and starts being merchandising. The Florida dealer did not sell that Tesla because the test protected him. He sold it because he could put a document in front of a buyer and stop the conversation from being a negotiation about trust.
What "transparent" actually means operationally
Transparency is not a promise on a window banner. It is four specific things a customer can verify.
- The measurement is third-party. A number your own service department produced is a claim. A number an independent report produced is evidence. Our explainer on the third-party SoH certificate covers why the distinction changes how a buyer receives it.
- The result is published before the customer asks. On the VDP, on the window, in the walkaround. Producing it only when challenged tells the buyer you were prepared to not mention it.
- The unflattering results get published too. A car at 84% listed as a car at 84% is more persuasive than three cars listed at "excellent." Selective disclosure is detectable and it costs more credibility than the disclosure would have cost margin.
- The salesperson can explain the number. A report nobody on the floor can interpret creates a new question instead of closing one. This is a training item, not a technology item.

The five questions every EV buyer asks
These come up on every floor, and every one of them has a real answer that favors the sale when you have data.
"How much life is left in this battery?" Give the state of health figure and the cell spread, from an independent report. Explain that health measures capacity remaining and spread measures whether the cells are working together. Both matter.
"What happens when the warranty ends?" Most manufacturer coverage runs eight years or a defined mileage against capacity falling below a threshold. Tell them the exact expiry for this VIN. If extended coverage is available, this is where it belongs in the conversation, not earlier.
"Is 84% good or bad?" It is normal for the age and mileage. In our dataset, 91% of tested vehicles sit at 80% or above, and median health at eleven years and older is still around 80%. Context turns a scary number into a reassuring one.
"Will it charge as fast as when it was new?" Slightly slower at the peak in most cases, and the difference on a real session is usually minutes. Cold weather affects it far more than age does.
"What would a replacement cost if it went wrong?" Give the honest range rather than dodging. Then point out that the report in their hand is what tells you this specific car is not in the small group where that question becomes live.
"Won't publishing a low score kill the car?"
This is the objection every used car manager raises, and it deserves a direct answer.
Publishing an 82% score does not kill the car. Refusing to publish anything kills the car, because the buyer assumes the worst and you have given them no reason not to.
Three things happen when you publish everything.
The high scores become credible. A lot where every car shows a number, including the mediocre ones, is a lot where the 96% score means something. A lot where every car is described as "excellent" is a lot where nothing means anything.
The low-scoring cars find their buyer faster. Somebody buying a commuter car for a twenty-mile round trip does not need 95% health. They need a fair price and a clear picture, and they will pay for it if you let them.
Your negotiations get shorter. The battery stops being the lever the customer uses to grind you, because the number is already on the window and already priced in.
The dealers who struggle with this are usually the ones publishing selectively. Buyers notice the gaps, and a gap reads worse than a low number.
The competence gap is the real bottleneck
Selling used EVs is a process change before it is a technology change. It requires competence, knowledge, and data to answer buyer questions that did not exist five years ago.
The questions that come up on every floor:
- How much life is left in this battery?
- What happens when the warranty ends?
- Is 84% good or bad?
- Will it charge as fast as when it was new?
- What would a replacement cost if it went wrong?
Every one of those has a real answer. Most of them have an answer that is favorable to the sale. None of them can be answered by a salesperson who has never seen a battery report.
The gap is not buyer skepticism. It is that the person answering does not know, and the buyer can tell.
Where to start
If you are running a used department and want to move on this, the order that works:
- Test every EV in inventory now, not just new acquisitions. You need the whole lot consistent or the untested cars look deliberately excluded.
- Set an acquisition floor at 80% SoH. The prevalence math above is the justification, and it costs you 9% of available inventory.
- Put the score on the VDP for every unit, high and low.
- Spend one hour with the sales team on reading a report. One hour.
- Attach the report to the customer's paperwork so the transparency survives the sale and follows them into the referral conversation.
Dealers using certified EV health scores consistently describe the same effect the Florida dealer described. The battery stops being the objection and becomes the reason the car is worth the money.
He texted me at 1:34 AM. I was in Italy, so it was a perfectly reasonable hour for me. But he was clearly still thinking about it at the end of a day where a test that morning turned into a sale that night.
