Used EV Sales Growth in the Florida Car Market

Used EV Sales Growth in the Florida Car Market

By Niccolò Ferrari, Voltest

TL;DR: Used EV sales around Tampa Bay grew 19% this summer, and EVs took a bigger share of used-car sales. Tallahassee is a much smaller market, and its sales dipped. For Florida dealers, more used EVs means more listings to compete with and more batteries to check before you buy.

We have tested over 12,000 used EVs at dealerships and auctions [1]. To measure the EV sales impact on dealerships in Florida, we analyzed used EV sales at every dealer within 100 miles of Tampa Bay and Tallahassee from June 24 to September 21, 2026 [2]. The two areas sit at opposite ends of the Florida car market.

Key Takeaways

  • Used EV sales around Tampa Bay grew 19% this summer [2].
  • EVs grew faster than the used market as a whole, so the gain was more than a busy summer.
  • Tampa Bay dealers are stocking more used EVs, led by luxury franchise stores.
  • In both areas, the median used EV sold in about three weeks.
  • Tallahassee's dip was a handful of cars in a small market.

How much did used EV sales grow in the Florida car market this summer?

Around Tampa Bay, used EV sales grew 19%. Around Tallahassee, they fell, but that whole area sells fewer than 40 used EVs a month [2]. The table has the full numbers.

Florida area (100-mile radius) Used EVs sold, Jun 24 to Jul 23 Used EVs sold, Aug 23 to Sep 21 Growth EV share of used-car sales now Median days to sell
Tampa Bay 1,501 1,780 +19% About 1 in 32 (was 1 in 37) 21
Tallahassee 36 27 -25% About 1 in 240 (was 1 in 200) 24

A car counts as sold when its VIN leaves dealer inventory and is no longer listed anywhere.

Where did used EV sales grow around Tampa Bay?

The Tampa Bay radius reaches well past the bay, out to Orlando, Lakeland and Sarasota. For a used car manager in Tampa, the shoppers and the competing listings sit across that whole area.

Most of the growth came in late July and August, and sales held there through September. EVs also took a bigger share of used-car sales, rising to about 1 in 32 [2]. That means EVs grew faster than the used market overall.

In store terms, if your used-car mix matched the Tampa Bay market, about 3 of every 100 used cars you retail would be EVs.

Are Tampa Bay dealers stocking more used EVs?

Yes. Dealers around Tampa Bay took in 25% more used EVs over 90 days [2].

Luxury franchise stores led the increase. Within 30 miles of Tampa, the fastest growth came from two Mercedes-Benz stores and a BMW store.

For a used car manager, that means two things. More used EVs are arriving through trades and auctions, including makes a franchise store does not sell new. And shoppers have more listings to compare against yours.

Why did used EV sales fall around Tallahassee?

The drop was a handful of cars in a small market. Dealers across the whole radius sell fewer than 40 used EVs a month, so one slow month moves the percentage a lot [2].

No store in the Tallahassee area sells used EVs at volume yet. The cars that did sell went in about the same time as around Tampa Bay. The sample is small, so treat that as an observation only.

For a Tallahassee dealer, that can be a reason to wait, or a reason to be the first store in the area that knows how to sell used EVs.

What is the EV sales impact on dealerships in Florida?

It looks different in each part of the Florida car market.

Around Tampa Bay, competition is growing. Shoppers compare listings across a radius that runs from Sarasota to Orlando. The listing that answers the battery question first gets the call.

Around Tampa Bay, more EVs reach every store. Each used EV that comes through a trade appraisal or an auction needs a battery check before you make an offer.

Around Tallahassee, the field is open. A store that stocks a few well-tested EVs and lists them with battery data can stand out quickly. Our post on EV sourcing for dealerships covers the supply side of the 2026 used EV market.

How does battery degradation affect used EV resale value?

As more Florida stores stock used EVs, battery health becomes the main difference between two cars with the same year, model and mileage. State of health (SOH) is the battery's usable capacity today compared to new. Lower SOH means less range, and range is what an EV shopper pays for.

Our customer in Raleigh, NC shows how this reaches the price. They listed a 2021 Tesla Model Y with excellent battery health about $2,500 above two comparable Model Ys with good battery health, and showed shoppers the report to explain why [3].

2021 Tesla Model Y Mileage Battery health Listed price
Our customer in Raleigh, NC 55,000 Excellent $26,500
Another dealer 66,000 Good $23,950
Another dealer 73,000 Good $23,999

Mileage alone does not set the value. In our data, about 41 of every 42 used EVs over 124,000 miles showed no battery failure signal [1]. A test tells you which high-mileage EVs are good buys at auction.

Sustained high heat also speeds up battery aging, which is one more reason to test every used EV in Florida before you price it. Our guide on how to appraise electric vehicles covers the appraisal steps.

What should Florida dealers do as used EV sales grow?

  1. Test every used EV before you make an offer or set a price. Test during the trade appraisal and on arrival from auction, before recon.
  2. Price on battery health as well as year and mileage. Our post on EV inventory pricing explains how.
  3. Show the battery score on every used EV listing. Shoppers compare used EV cars across a wide radius. Voltest's EV inventory sales tools put the score on your SRP and VDP.
  4. Offer a battery warranty in F&I. Voltest Protect covers the high-voltage battery for the life of the vehicle. Any car with a Voltest SOH of 80% or higher qualifies [4].
  5. Track your own area every month. Watch used EVs sold, EV share of used-car sales, and days to sell.

Most used EV batteries are healthy. The test finds the few that are not before they cost you money, and gives you a report to show shoppers on the rest.

FAQ

What are the implications of fast battery degradation on resale value?

Faster degradation means lower state of health and less range for the next owner. Shoppers pay less for less range, so a used EV with a weak battery is worth less than the same car with a healthy one. Test the battery before you price the car.

What is the impact of battery degradation on EV resale value at auction?

The auction condition report does not cover the battery. A dealer who tests on arrival can price or arbitrate based on the result. A dealer who skips the test finds out after recon, or after the sale.

What share of used EVs have a battery problem?

In our data, about 1 in 180 tested used EVs showed a battery failure signal [1]. That is what our test found at the time of testing, and it does not predict future failures.

How long does a battery test take?

A Voltest test takes about two minutes through the OBD port. The report arrives by email as a PDF.

What counts as a sold used EV in this analysis?

A car counts as sold when its VIN leaves dealer inventory and is no longer listed anywhere. The analysis covers used battery-electric vehicles at all dealers within 100 miles of each city [2].
