Hyundai & Kia ICCU Recall Explained: Why 208,000 EVs Were Recalled Twice
Why did Hyundai/Kia recall (twice) 208,000 EVs?
The issue affecting the ICCU (Integrated Charging Control Unit) on Hyundai, Kia and Genesis EVs isn't new.
But with over 208,000 vehicles recalled (many twice), it's worth understanding if you're buying or selling used EVs from these brands from 2022-2024.
The ICCU is essentially the alternator of an EV.
In a gas car, the alternator converts mechanical energy into electricity.
In an EV, the ICCU steps down high-voltage DC power from the traction battery to 12V necessary to run low-voltage systems and electronics.
When the ICCU fails, your 12V system dies. And when that happens, your EV can't engage the main battery contactors, essentially becoming unoperable.
Hyundai first became aware of the problem in October 2022 after inspecting ICCUs returned from warranty claims.
The recall affects 62,872 Kia vehicles and 145,235 Hyundai and Genesis vehicles, including:
• 2022-2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5
• 2023-2025 Ioniq 6
• 2022-2024 Kia EV6
• Several Genesis electrified models
Drivers would hear a "pop," see dashboard warnings, then watch their power fade over 20-40 minutes as the 12V battery depleted with no way to recharge.
Hyundai's first fix in March 2024 tried to solve this with software, reprogramming the ICCU to monitor temperatures more closely and adding predictive algorithms to detect early stress.
But that wasn't enough.
The ICCU contains power transistors that switch thousands of times per second to convert high-voltage pack power down to 12V, and that process generates a lot of heat.
Over time, under the unique stress patterns of EVs (regenerative braking events, fast-charging loads and constant thermal cycling), those components can be pushed past their limits.
In the affected Hyundai/Kia units, that stress can eventually damage the ICCU's electronics or blow its internal 12V fuse, which is why some cars suddenly lose 12V support and shut down.
The second recall in November 2024 was more comprehensive.
Complete ICCU replacement with enhanced thermal management, more robust fusing, and improved manufacturing quality control.
Plus updated software with more conservative thermal limits and better diagnostics.
All repairs are completed free of charge, regardless of whether the vehicles are still covered under warranty.
However, Hyundai/Kia's handling of the ICCU issue has been mixed in owner perception.
While the formal recall and free repair are seen as necessary and responsible, many owners are frustrated by repeated failures, long parts delays and inconsistent dealer support, leading to lemon law claims.
Some owners report quick resolution, while others describe months of downtime, stalled buyback negotiations and even talk of class actions and out-of-court settlements.
The good news is that once properly fixed with the second-generation ICCU, these are solid vehicles.
